Maryam is stuck in an abusive marriage, living with her in-laws, in a conservative, toxically religious Middle Eastern setting. A few years back, her father was given a jar of priceless perfume by a dying leper and it seemed as if their fortunes would improve, but then Maryam's father contracted leprosy and was exiled by the village. Maryam and her brother, Eleazar, and sister, Marta, experience the shame and ostracism this brings. The precious jar that was meant to bring them freedom, but it only seems to have brought destruction. But rumours abound concerning a new doctor; perhaps hope is on the horizon...

This book was skillfully written by Chris Aslan. I believe that, through it, he gave us a very real idea of the way things were when Jesus was on the earth. The shift from legalism to "Amazing Grace" was vividly portrayed. My heart was stirred to love and worship as attitudes were dramatically changed when Jesus came, especially those of "Mary."
I especially liked the portrayal of the breaking of the Alabaster Vase and the Anointing of Jesus's feet. The emotions of that event challenged my heart to greater Love for the Savior.
I can't think of anything that I particularly disliked in the book, except I hated to see the father die without experiencing healing. However, that would have distorted the Biblical account.
I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Biblical fiction.
Thank you Chris, for blessing my heart through this book.

Chris has done an amazing job of bringing to life a Biblical story with insight into culture, relationships and shame with honor. A page turner.
Absolutely loved it! Sucks you in from the beginning. Quite a tear jerker at moments! The characters are so realistic! Great book, we are giving to to several friends for Christmas
If I'd had time to finish this book in one sitting I would have. It draws you into the characters' lives and culture from the start and weaves a heart wrenching yet beautifully redemptive tale. Thanks Chris Aslan for sharing your talents with us.
This book was a real page-turner. It is a fairly accurate description of life in a middle eastern village. It has everything a good fiction book should have - interesting characters, some plot twists, and a great hero! Although it is a fictionalized account, it does a great job weaving together several different stories from the gospel accounts of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead and visiting Mary and Martha. You'll love it and want more!
What a great read, my first encounter with Christian fiction, the author's vivid descriptions had me transported to a time and place far away and long ago. The story was heartwarming and heartbreaking at times, I found myself reaching for the tissues more than once! Loved the characters and familiar stories told with a twist. Such an easy read as I wanted to keep going to find out what happened next. I recommend this book to every one,a really good book for non Christians who are seeking too as the way Jesus is presented is so accessible.
This book was jaw-dropping with it's beautifully interwoven characters, finely-tuned story line, Middle Eastern setting and historical nuance. Years ago, I swore off 'biblical fiction,' but this book surprised me. In fact, I was well into this book before I recognized it as such. This story of one woman, plus her family and village, literally sings from the pages. The fact that it is written by a man, made it even more intriguing. It drew me in, held me captive and dropped me off, breathless, at the conclusion. I won't soon forget this book.
WOW - one of the most captivating, books I've read in awhile. I devoured it in 2-3 days (and I'm a busy mom of two under two)! I went into the book supposing it was one thing, and found my initial expectation of the time period and location and characters was totally upended halfway through - an unexpected and completely pleasant surprise for me (but will avoid spoilers). I was talking non-stop to my family members about the novel as it progressed - teasing out the themes, wondering where it was headed, and how the insurmountable challenges faced by the characters would be overcome.

I will say - this novel deals with real life issues, many of which are particularly prevalent in honor/shame cultures, but also happen (on different levels maybe) in western cultures. It deals with subjects like rape, domestic abuse, and even public execution - letting the raw truth speak for itself, but without being crass or unnecessarily graphic. I would say if you've comfortably read Francine Rivers, you're in similar territory here. And just like her, the author doesn't leave the characters in a place of tragedy - they do find their way to hope and healing. They still have to deal with the realistic consequences of their past trauma and/or choices, but they do come out transformed.

Having spent some time in Central Asia like Chris, I know that the themes and issues presented are very real and relevant. I think that's what made this novel so glorious to me. It could be written about life in the 1st century Middle East, as well as a current-day village life in Central Asia. Its timelessness makes it even more brilliant to me.

Finally - the depth of the characters and the pure poetry of the writing were powerful, transporting me into the heroine's world effortlessly. I couldn't get her or her situation out of my mind, even days after finishing the novel. This is a book I would re-read (not so usual for me), because of its beauty and message of hope. Very happy to recommend it for others! Bravo, Chris - bravo!
