Good world-building as mentioned by other reviewers. Good at keeping the action going. But what was that ending??? She just stopped, like her computer died so she had to stop there.Generally, an author poses one or more central questions and then spends the rest of the book answering them. They drive the story along, more or less. In this case, we wonder if Jathen will ever be king, will he ever find out who his father is, will he ever find out which Way is his to follow, will he ever find his one true love, will he ever figure out what he really is and whether or not he has any other Abilities, and finally will he ever grow up and quit whining. Although lots of things happen, and we do eventually learn why and how they happened, not one of the central questions is answered. Well okay, in the last few pages of the book we are told that Jathen may be a bit more mature now, but we never get to see it in play since apparently that's where the author's computer must have died.
If you, too, consider endings like this a form of reader abuse, don't read this book at least until the next book in the series is available. Hopefully the author will have figured out how to write endings by then and you can put the two together into one really big, really good book.

Different, hard at first, but worth the beginning. A tale of self discovery, that love and loss are both used to mold a person. It's the choice of the person makes during the molding that sets the person's path for good or evil, or a mixture of both.
I was sad to see this go this made me a guy who has read 30000 pages in one quarter have to think about plot I can say this book is in my top 4 #4 to be exact because nothing can beat journeyman and the like but it always makes me sad to see such a great story end I'm gonna be a suit commercial and say you gonna like reading this book I can guarantee it.
The book's greatest strength is its likeable and human cast. The fantasy world is unique and the author does a great job of focusing on what's relevant and not dumping exposition for no reason. The overarching plot is still very mysterious but it's really more in the service of the characters journey anyway. Really refreshing break from the usual fantasy, and very memorable.
I don't read much modern fantasy fiction, because it tends to be formulaic and generally plagiaristic of all the good literature that has come before. This book, however, was completely fresh and original, with believable characters and a page-turning mystery plot that hooked me immediately. The underdog protagonist, Jathen, is sympathetic without being a good-guy caricature, and both his friends and foes are so clearly and realistically portrayed that you feel like they are real people whom you have met, and whose successes and failures are meaningful to you. It is wonderful to follow an adventure whose hero doesn't really know exactly what he is searching for--because isn't that what life is like?
I particularly enjoyed the veins of humour which are mixed in with often serious subject matter, as well as the many surprises which keep you constantly guessing. Possibly the best part is the vivid, detailed world the characters inhabit, which (like our own world) provides an endless variety of cultures, races, powers, structures, and complex belief systems that Jathen must navigate on his journey to self-discovery. I was delighted to take that journey with him, and I am looking forward to the sequel. I would recommend this book to just about anyone who enjoys a good story, a fully realised setting, and a bit of magic.
You know the author has done a great job when you want to climb into a book and become a part of it. The scope of this novel is amazing - an entire imagined world filled with unusual races, each with a deliberately crafted history and culture. The main story line features the unknown future that faces Jathen, whose rightful place as heir to the throne of the Tazu Nation is in jeopardy due to the fact he looks human and is unable to shift into dragon form like others of his kind. Confronted with this prejudice, as well as his own self-doubt, he sets out to determine his true path in life. Other characters and subplots are deftly woven in, resulting in a truly exciting and readable work of fiction. I enjoyed the depth of the characters, the descriptive and engaging style of writing, and themes that touch on spirituality, politics, friendship, truth, and loyalty. It's one of those books you keep thinking about long after you've read the final word.
This book is the intro into a very complex and fascinating universe. Why only 4 stars you ask? Because it was just too long. Now, in all honesty, a lot of what I considered not necessary to plot movement, may very well have been set up for the next books, in which case, once they are written and read, I may come back and change my rating.
Do not let the 4 stars dissuade you from buying and reading this book. It is well written, the characters are well developed, and the universe is fantastic.
The protagonist, Jathen, is a "moot" – his parents are dragons, and when he hatched from his egg, he was not only human, but unable to shift to his dragon form. This is not necessarily a good thing, as he is the heir apparent to the Tazu – dragon shifters. How can he possibly rule over dragons when he isn't one. Not only can he not shift, he seems to have no Talent at all.
Jathen goes on a journey of discovery to find out who and what he is, and to decide if he even wants to rule. He comes of age in this series, or at least we hope he does. There are times when I'm not sure he's learning a great deal, which makes him, really, more human. Things don't come easy for him, and he's not always the brightest candle in the lantern.
I look forward to reading and accompanying Jathen as he discovers who, and what, he truly is.
